I fell in love with Italy on a trip in 2025. It’s so hard to imagine that this building with the pale yellow stucco was built in the 17th century. I loved the vines and flowers that cascaded down this ancient ruin. They seemed to be exploding with life, quietly bringing this old building to life.

It’s the afternoon on a cold, crisp winter day. Our trail leads us ever higher in the Gatineau Park foothills. Tall black trees are guarding the forest, their bare outstretched arms reaching for the warmth of the sun. The intense sunlight cuts through the bright cerulean blue sky, past the trees, momentarily blinding us. The angle of the light turns the white blankets of snow to various shades of pastel blue, and the lengthening shadows, cast by the trees, deepened into a profound, dark purple.

The Rideau Woodland Ramble is a garden centre, trail system and series of beautiful gardens, basically a wonderful place to spend a summer day.

Sitting by this pond working on this piece I felt like I had escaped into a world where time stood still. I used chalk pastels as they allowed me to blend the rich colours that helped me evoke the soothing ambiance of this quiet sanctuary.
